EQUINE DISEASE AND AILMENTS
The most common ailments found in Horses are
Equine Herpes - The disease is caused by a common virus in the horse, called equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). EHV-1 is associated with three disease syndromes: respiratory disease, abortion and neurological disease. It is not known why the virus sometimes causes respiratory symptoms only and causes neurological disease and/or abortion on other occasions. During an outbreak of paralytic EHV, abortions and respiratory symptoms may also occur. In outbreaks of the disease, not all infected animals will show clinical signs.
Ring Worm and Rain Rot - Two of the more common forms of skin disease are ringworm (or dermatophytosis) and rain rot (dermatophilosis). Ringworm is a fungal infection that spreads from horse to horse through common grooming tools, saddle pads or harness. Generally, damp, crowded and dark conditions (winter and autumn) will predispose a horse to ringworm.
Tetanus - Tetanus occurs when a wound becomes infected with Clostridium tetani. Organisms are routinely found in the soil and the faeces of domestic animals.
Influenza (the Flu) and Rhinopneumoniis (a cold)
Distemper or Strangles - Strangles is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus. The symptoms classically include high temperature, coughing, nasal discharge and swollen and abscessed lymph nodes of the head
Thrush - It is one of the more common diseases of the equine hoof. Thrush is most commonly associated with poor management practices or conditions. It can be seen in horses that are allowed to stand in paddocks or stalls that are full of wet manure.
All of the above are members of various forms of Bacteria, Fungi or Virus that are controllable by good hygiene practices. The choice of the right kind of disinfectant is important and a disinfectant that cleans as well saves on time. Using a number of different products could cause problems due to chemical incompatibility.
Used as part of the routine cleaning program of the establishment Alphacare Safe Solutions can be used to help prevent all of the above problems. The following guidance will help maintain a healthy environment and also assist the establishment with its duty of care to staff and comply with the requirements of COSHH.
